My interpretation of the pattern for Plain Ribbed Muffatees (Miss Lambert, My Knitting Book, 1843, First Series, p.18 & 19):
DESCRIPTION
Plain Ribbed Muffatees are a pair of open tube wrist warmers that cover the wrists and bottom of the hands up to the fingers. The muffatees are knit in the round using K3, P3 ribbing.
Sizing: Adult 7-7.5″ (17.5-19cm) hand circumference, Circumference x Height: 5.5” x 6.5” (14cm x16cm)
MATERIALS
Yarn: DK yarn – 165yds/150m. Sample made with Berocco Vintage DK (Cerulean 21190).
Needles: 4mm circular needle or DPNs
Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker
Gauge (in pattern): 32 st x 38 rows = 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm)
TERMINOLOGY
- CO – cast on
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rnd – round
- k – knit
- p – purl
DIRECTIONS
CO 72 sts using long tail cast on and join in the round, being careful not to twist
Place stitch marker to mark beginning of rnd
Work every rnd as follows: *k3, p3, repeat from * to end
Repeat until muffatee reaches 6.5″/16cm
Bind off loosely and sew in ends
Make a second muffatee and enjoy wearing a piece of the past!
